Thinking of Becoming a Driving Instructor?
Welcome to our PDI area. At ADINJC, we have many experienced PDI trainers and knowledge of helping PDIs with queries and support. We hope you find this section valuable.

Are You Suitable?
To charge anyone for a driving lesson, you have to become a driving instructor for it to be legal.
As part of the process, you can decide to take out a trainee licence where you can charge for lessons to help towards the cost of your training and motoring costs, etc.
- Over 21 years of age
- Held a full driving licence for at least 3 years
- No disqualification in the last 4 years
- Can read a number plate at 27.5m (with glasses if required)

Work & Lifestyle

Becoming a driving instructor offers a career that can adapt to your lifestyle. Many ADIs enjoy the freedom of setting their own schedules and balancing work with family or other commitments. While flexibility is a huge advantage, it’s important to remember that pupils will need consistent lessons and may require availability outside of “school hours.”
- Flexible Hours – choose when and how much you work.
- Part-Time Options -ideal for fitting around school runs or other commitments.
- Pupil Needs – expect some lessons outside school hours and at different times of day (including evenings).
Training & Finding a Trainer
Your choice of trainer or training school is one of the most important decisions you’ll make. A good trainer provides not only technical knowledge but also guidance through the qualification process. Always take time to research your options before committing.
- Research ORDIT-registered trainers on the DVSA site
- Speak to trainers directly and check contracts carefully
- Consider whether training packages include a car lease or if you’ll supply your own with dual controls
Resources & Learning Materials
The right resources make a big difference in your preparation. Alongside official DVSA materials, there are books, websites, and videos tailored to help PDIs succeed. These materials cover everything from theory tests to business skills, ensuring you’re equipped for both exams and real-world teaching.
